God is My Portion

Psalm 16:5-6
The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.
The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage.

Thou art my portion, O LORD: I have said that I would keep thy words. - Psalm 119:57
The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him. - Lamentations 3:24

In the lands and times of the Bible, the village as a whole owned the farm land that surrounded it. The village would divide the land into lots and draw "lines" to mark the boundaries. They would hold a lottery to determine which lines and lots an individual in the village would get as his portion to farm. If the portion he got was near the village and had beautiful trees and water you would say that the lines had fallen to him in pleasant places. If he got a rocky portion far from home he might be disappointed. God's Word declares that God is our portion. We have truly received a goodly heritage in pleasant places!
