Sweet Smelling Savour 2 Corinthians 2:14-16 Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place. For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish: To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. |
When the Roman army won a great military battle, the conquering army would have a "Triumphal Procession." The march would begin outside the city of Rome and end in the capital. The victorious army would return to the joyful shouts of the people, and they would bring their prisoners with them. The general would lead his army followed by prisoners captured from the defeated army. In the procession incense bearers marched in the parade. The streets would be filled with the savour of incense. To the Roman soldiers in the triumphal procession, the incense smelled of victory and life. To the defeated prisoners, most of whom were being lead to their execution, the same incense smelled of defeat and thus of their death.
The Word of God declares that we are the smell or savour of Christ. To those who believe the gospel we speak, we are the sweet smell of life. To those who reject it, we are the stink of death.
