Serve One Another

John 13:4-5,12-15
He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.
After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.

   So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?
   Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.
   If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.
   For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.

In the Bible lands and times the lowliest bondslave was responsible for washing the feet of his master's family or guests when they arrived at the house. People would get dirty feet from wearing only sandals when walking on the dusty roads. When a person of high rank or royalty visited, the head of the house would show his great respect for the man by washing his feet and serving him at supper. This was a very high compliment for a man to give his guest. Jesus Christ performed this humble task to set an example of love, service, and humility. As believers, we are to treat one another like royalty and be willing to do the lowliest task in order to bless and serve one another.
