God is Light

1 John 1:5
This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

The Word of God declares that God is light.  This declaration is made in the context of "that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ."  If we are going to have a full sharing relationship with the Father we must understand that His nature is light and in Him is NO DARKNESS at all.

Genesis 1:3-4
And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

God is light and light is good!  There is no evil or darkness in God.

James 1:17-18
Every good gift and every perfect gift [act of giving] is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

God is light and God is good.  His nature does not change (no variableness).  There is not even a shadow of turning with God.  He is all light!  Therefore, what God gives is also light.  God's gifts are good and when He acts, that action is a perfect act of giving.  When we believed His Word as recorded in Romans 10:9-10, He gave us of His nature.  He gave us holy spirit making us His sons and daughters.  He begat us.  Light begets light.  God is the Father of lights and He gave us His perfect gift of light nature.  We are the best of the best - the firstfruits of God's creatures.

1 Thessalonians 5:5
Ye are all the children of the light, and the children of the day:  we are not of the night nor of darkness.

2 Corinthians 4:6
For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

The same God who commanded light to shine out of darkness in Genesis commanded light to shine in our dark hearts when we believed.  God placed His holy spirit in us making us His sons and daughters.  We have this glorious light (which is compared to the light in Genesis) in "earthen vessels."  The excellency of all this power and light is of God and not of us.  We are light because God, our Father, is light.

1 Peter 2:9
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

Colossians 1:12
Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:
Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

God called us to His marvelous light and has given us His perfect gift of holy spirit.  He has made us adequate to share in the inheritance that He has given to us as we are "the saints in light!"  He has delivered us from the darkness of this world by the work of His son Jesus Christ and He has made us to be citizens in His kingdom.  Now that is marvelous light!

Ephesians 5:8-13
For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
(For the fruit of the Spirit [light] is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them is secret.
But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doeth make manifest is light.

We are NOW the children of light and we have a responsibility to walk proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.  We are to walk in the light as He is light.  That which is light produces some pretty interesting fruit: goodness, righteousness, and truth.  We do not continue to fellowship with the things of darkness.  Rather, we bring the light of God's Word to every situation which lights up the scene.  Light is goodness and righteousness and truth.  Light makes manifest that which is hidden in the darkness.

2 Corinthians 6:14
Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness?  and what communion hath light with darkness?

Light and darkness cannot exist together in the same place.  Fellowship with the darkness of this world after you are born again is like yoking a ox and a mule together.  It is an unequal and uncomfortable fit.  To fellowship with darkness requires you to "cover-up" or "hide" the light within.  That is why a believer who spends his or her time trying to fellowship with unbelievers will always feel out of place and uncomfortable.  We need to be out there making manifest the hidden things of darkness with the light of God's Word, but our fellowship needs to be with the saints in light and not with the world.  We need to share and spend time with likeminded believers in the body of Christ.

1 John 1:6-7
If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

God is light.  If we are to fellowship with Him and with each other we must walk in light as He is light.

Philippians 2:13-16a
For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
Do all things without murmurings and disputings:
   That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;
   Holding forth the word of life;

God is light and God is good.  We are the sons of God shining as lights in this world as we hold forth the word of life.  What an awesome privilege!  It is God that is at work in us to do of His GOOD pleasure.

Proverbs 4:18-19
But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.
The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.

We have God's Word to light our paths until that perfect day when Christ returns and the day star arises in our hearts.  We do not have to continue to stumble around in the darkness of this world.  Let us continue to walk in the light as He is light and hold forth His glorious word of life until that perfect day when Christ returns.
