Out of the Mouth of God

Matthew 4:4
But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

God is spirit according to John 4:24.  God does not have a mouth as men and women do.  When God uses a figure of speech in His Word like "out of the mouth of God," the figure is used for emphasis.  God is pointing out that He is the author of His Word.  The word of God comes from God!
This scripture, quoted by the Lord Jesus Christ, in answer to the temptation of the Devil, comes from Deuteronomy chapter 8:

Deuteronomy 8:1-4
All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers.
And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.
And he humbled thee, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.
Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years.

God's Word is given that man may live.  The children of Israel multiplied, had food, had clothing that lasted 40 years, had health, etc. etc. etc. because they lived by the Word of God.  When God's Word is that which we rely on and hold in our heart, God supplies all of our need.

2 Timothy 3:16
All scripture is given by inspiration of God [God-breathed], and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

The five words "given by inspiration of God" are translated from a one-word figure of speech [theopneustos] in the Greek text. God-breathed ALL of the scripture. Just like the words "out of the mouth of God", the figure of speech "God-breathed" tells us how important it is for us to know that the scripture came from God. God is spirit and He does not breathe as people do; and even people do not breathe scripture. God wants us to know that the Bible is His Word!

Proverbs 2:6
For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

Wisdom, knowledge, and understand are given to us by the words that come from God.  It is by God's wisdom and knowledge that ALL things exist.

Proverbs 3:19
The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.

Psalm 33:6-9
By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and the host of them by the breath of his mouth.
He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses.
Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.
For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.

God's Word is powerful.  The heavens and all that are in them were the result of God speaking forth His mighty Word.  "And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven . . . and it was so!"
He spake and it WAS.  He commanded, and it stood fast.  God's Word is powerful because God is the source of His Word.

Hebrews 11:3
Through faith [by belief] we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

God has told us that He is the creator of the heavens and the earth and that these things which we see around us are the result of His Word.  Now, we just have to believe.  We have been given the knowledge of God's Word.  We just have to believe it.

Isaiah 45:12, 18-23
I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded. . . .
For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.
I have not spoken in secret, in a dark place of the earth: I said not unto the seed of Jacob, Seek ye me in vain: I the LORD speak righteousness, I declare things that are right.
Assemble yourselves and come, draw near together, ye that are escaped of the nations: they have no knowledge that set up the wood of their graven image, and pray unto a god that cannot save.
Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD?  and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me.
Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.
I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.

God is right.  The Word from His mouth is that He created the earth for us.  We are to continually look to Him and the word of God given to us.
