Psalm 18:1-2
I will love thee, O Lord, my
strength.
The
Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and
my deliverer; my God, my strength [my rock],
in whom I will trust: my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and
my high tower.
God is the strength of our life. He is a firm rock in a world that is troubled. The world is an unstable and slippery place where things people rely upon often fail. People rely on money and worldly institutions. People rely on friends and family. We would all like to trust and be trusted. Yet all too often those things which seem to be trustworthy fail. God is our only true rock. He can be trusted at all times and in every situation because God is unmovable!
Psalm 18:4-6
The sorrows of death compassed
me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid.
The sorrows of hell compassed
me about: the snares of death prevented me.
In my distress I called upon
the Lord, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple,
and my cry came before him, even into
his ears.
When the troubles of this world surround us we can go
to God who is our rock. When we trust in God as our strength and
call upon Him in times of trouble, His Word declares that He hears us and
our voice comes before Him "even into His ears."
Not only does God's Word declare that He hears
us in time of trouble; It declares that He RESPONDS!
Psalm 18:7-8
Then the earth shook and trembled;
the foundations also of the hills moved and were shaken, because he was
wroth.
There went up a smoke out of
his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by
it.
God is an unmovable rock. But when God moves look out! When we are in distress and we call upon God - GOD ACTS! The earth shook! The hills moved! God was wroth! He was MAD! Why? Because a believer was in distress - surrounded by floods of ungodly men and the snares of death. Because a believer in his distress called upon God as his strength to help.
Psalm 18:9-12
He
bowed the heavens also, and came down: and
darkness was under his feet.
And he rode upon a cherub, and
did fly: yea, he did fly upon the wings of the wind.
He made darkness his secret place;
his pavilion round about him were dark waters and thick clouds
of the skies.
At the brightness that was
before him his thick clouds passed, hail stones and coals of fire.
In response to the cry of a believer in distress God came down like a mighty storm. Just picture the brightness of the lightning throwing hail and coals of fire as the dark storm clouds speed toward the enemy! What a tremendous figure of speech! God rushes like an angry storm when believers are in distress.
Psalm 18:13-15
The Lord also thundered in the
heavens, and the Highest gave his voice; hail stones and coals of
fire.
Yea, he sent out his arrows and
scattered them; and he shot out lightnings, and discomforted them.
Then the channels of waters were
seen, and the foundations of the world were discovered at thy rebuke, O
Lord, at the blast of the breath of thy nostrils.
The power of God is awesome! The voice of His Word like thunder sent out hail and coals of fire and lightnings which scattered and discomforted the enemies of the believer. So powerful was the blast of the breath of God that the waters of the seas were blown apart and the foundations of the earth beneath could be seen! What a storm! I sure would not want to be the ungodly man on the receiving end of God's wrath when a believer calls upon God.
Psalm 18:16-18
He sent from above, he took me,
he drew me out of many waters.
He delivered me from my strong
enemy, and from them which hated me: for they were too strong for me.
They prevented me in the day of my
calamity: but the Lord was my stay.
The enemy is too strong for us to handle on our own. God must be our strength and our salvation. He is our rock. He is our deliverer. He is our stay. When we stay put on God as our unmovable rock we have the strength to overcome all adversity. With God as our rock - WE SHALL NOT BE MOVED.
Psalm 16:8
I have set the Lord always before
me: Because he is at my right hand, I
shall not be moved.
Psalm 40:2
He brought me up also out of
an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set
my feet upon a rock, and established
my goings.
Psalm 55:22
Cast thy burden upon the Lord,
and he shall sustain thee: he shall never
suffer the righteous to be moved.
Psalm 71:3
Be thou my strong habitation,
whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast given commandment to
save me; for thou art my rock and
my fortress.
Psalm 121:3
He
will not suffer thy foot to be moved:
he that keepeth thee will not slumber.
Proverbs 12:3
A man shall not be established
by wickedness: but the root of the righteous
shall not be moved.
Psalm 62:5-7
My soul, wait thou only
upon God; for my expectation is from him.
He
only is my rock and my salvation; he
is my defence; I shall not be moved.
In God is my salvation
and my glory: the rock of my strength,
and my refuge, is in God.
