Psalm 27:11
Teach me thy way, O Lord, and lead
me in a plain path, because of mine enemies.
God's way, the plain path, is clearly laid out in His Word. Some believe that if you are a good person and do your best to be kind that God will bless you no matter what you choose to believe. I recently heard a young Christian sharing what he knew about God with a woman at an airport. She could not understand why God would not save someone who was a good person. What difference does it make to God, she asked, if a person follows Buddha or some other religion. The young Christian agreed that God, being a loving and kind God, would certainly accept anyone who did good regardless of what they believed. The young man was sincere. But he was dead wrong.
John 14:6
Jesus saith unto him, I am the
way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
The plain path, God's way, is the Lord Jesus Christ. To be saved, according to Romans 10:9-10 a person must confess with their mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in their heart that God raised him from the dead. That is the truth of God's Word. That is the only way to life. That is the plain path.
Psalm 25:10
All the paths of the Lord are
mercy [lovingkindness]
and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.
The plain path is a path of lovingkindness. It is also a path of truth. Lovingkindness without truth is not a path of the Lord. You must keep God's Word if you are going to follow His path. Remember also that truth without lovingkindness is not a path of the Lord. All the paths of the Lord are mercy AND truth.
Psalm 119:105
Thy word is a lamp unto
my feet, and light unto my path.
Proverbs 4:18:19
But the
path of the just is as the shining
light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.
The way of the wicked is as
darkness: they know not at what they stumble.
Did you ever try to walk around in your house in the dark and trip over something? That is what the path is like when you do not have the light of God's Word. You cannot even tell what the obstacles are that you are hitting. But with God's Word lighting the plain path, the path gets brighter and brighter.
The plain path of the Lord is "the path of the just."
Romans 5:8-9
But God commendeth his love toward
us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Much more then, being now
justified by his blood, we shall be saved
from wrath through him.
Romans 4:35
Who was delivered for our offences,
and was raised again for our justification.
The path of the just was established by Jesus Christ who died for us and was raised from the dead so that we could be justified.
Psalm 23:3
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth
me in the paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.
The plain path of the Lord is "the path of righteousness."
Romans 3:21
But now
the righteousness of God without the law is manifested,
being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
Even the
righteousness of God
which is by faith
of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them
that believe: for there is no difference.
The path of righteousness became available to you and me by the faith of Jesus Christ and it is given freely to all that believe. Righteousness is to be right before God. Only by following the path established by the Lord Jesus Christ can a man or woman be right before God. Once again righteousness comes by believing Romans 10:9-10 and no other way.
Psalm 16:11
Thou wilt shew me the
path of life: in thy presence is fullness
of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.
The plain path of the Lord is "the path of life."
John 3:16
For God so loved the world that
he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not
perish, but have everlasting life.
Not just life, but everlasting life. Now that is a path I want to be on. God gave his only begotten son. That is why there is no other way, no other path, that leads to God.
Proverbs 3:17
Her ways [Wisdom's
ways] are ways of pleasantness, and
all her paths are peace.
The plain path of the Lord is filled with the knowledge and wisdom that God provides in His Word. The ways of wisdom are "paths of peace."
Ephesians 2:13-14a
But now in Christ Jesus ye who
sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
For he
is our peace. . .
The text reads "he is our peace offering." The sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ was once and for all our peace offering to God. We are no longer separated from God or at odds with Him. We have peace with God through our Lord and savior Jesus Christ.
The plain path that leads to God is the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the way! It is a path of lovingkindness and truth. It is the path of the just. It is the path of righteousness. It is the path of everlasting life. It is the path of peace. It is a path lighted by the Word of God that shines more and more until the perfect day when Christ returns.
