Living on God's Word

Jeremiah 15:16
Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O Lord God of hosts.

The Word of God is made up of the words of God.  When Jeremiah found God's Word he lived on the words.  He devoured them.  They were food for his heart and soul that caused him joy.  As he continually fed on the words of God he had joy again and again - he rejoiced.  Just as we need physical food to sustain our physical bodies, we need the positive accurate words that come from God to feed our mind, soul, and heart.

Psalm 12:6
The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.

God's words are pure.  When we live off the words of men our heart is troubled and sickly because men's words are not pure.  The words of men are negative and full of the impurities of the world.  You can never tell, when you feed on the words of men, if you are eating healthy food or poison.  But God's words are pure.  They are powerful and they bring health to the hearers.

Matthew 4:4
But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Just as God designed the human body to need physical food (bread) he designed the mind of man to live on every word of God.  It is not enough to eat the words of God every once and awhile.  Man needs a consistent diet of God's health giving words.

Sweeter than Honey

Psalm 119:103
How sweet are thy words unto my taste!  Yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!

God's words are compared to the sweetness of honey.  It is the sweetness of the Word that attracts men and women to live on the words of God.

Psalm 19:10
More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold:  sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

The sweetness of God's words make them words to be desired.  We seek His words and we hold them forth to others because their sweetness makes them more desirable than fine gold.

Proverbs 16:24
Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

Just as honey is sweet to the taste God's words are sweet to the soul.  They bring health, therefore men and women desire them and therefore we share them with others.

The Bread of Life

Deuteronomy 8:3
And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live.

The children of Israel were tempted to walk away from God when they were hungry in the wilderness.  They had God's Word and His promise that He would lead them to a land flowing with milk and honey.  Yet, because of physical hunger they were tempted to not believe God's words spoken by Moses.  God supplied their physical need with "manna."  Manna was a bread like substance that God gave them daily to meet this physical need so that they would know that, as He had given His Word, He would supply all their needs and that man is meant to live on God's Word.  God's words are the life giving daily bread we need to live a life that is more than abundant.

John 6:30-31
They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?
Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

These people were not really interested in the Word of God that Jesus was sharing.  They had been present when he fed them with five loaves of bread and two fishes and they wanted another physical meal.  They reminded Jesus of the manna God supplied in the wilderness in an attempt to get Jesus to do another miracle and feed them again.  They claimed that if he would supply bread again then they would believe.  Jesus Christ replied that he was the true bread from heaven.
Jesus Christ is the subject of God's Word and the words in the Word reveal Christ.  Jesus Christ always spoke God's Word - so much so that he is called "The Word" in God's Word.  Jesus Christ came to fulfill God's promise of a redeemer and savior who would bring eternal life to man.    He was crucified for man and God raised him from the dead.  If man is to escape the death that is in the world and live, he must eat of the bread of life.  The Word of God revealed in the walk and life of the Lord Jesus Christ is the true bread from heaven that man needs to live.

John 6:57-58
As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.
This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.

Jesus Christ walked a perfect walk before God.  He spoke and fulfilled God's Word.  When we confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in our heart that God raised him from the dead we get saved.  We receive eternal life!  Now that is food indeed: the bread of life!  What magnificent words to live on.

Milk to Grow On

1 Peter 2:2
As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

The Word of God is compared to the milk that babies need to grow.  It is the simple pure Word that is the food we need to grow.  It is the goodness of God that leadeth men to repentance.  God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son.  Jesus Christ so loved that he gave his life for man.  He was our substitute and we have an identification with him.  God raised him from the dead to eternal life and provided that same life for us.  That is the pure milk of God's Word.  We need the milk of the Word to grow up.

Hebrews 5:12
For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

Some believers are so desirous of the meat of the Word that they never learn (or forget) the first principles.  It is the simple milk of the Word (the first principles) that allow us to grow up.  These believers should have been at the point of being teachers of the Word but they had never become well established in a knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ and what he accomplished in his death and resurrection.  They had become dull of hearing and were being lead about by every wind of doctrine because they did not live on the pure milk of the Word.

Meat for Adult Nourishment

Hebrews 5:13-14
For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
But strong meat beloneth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

We need to feed on the pure milk of God's Word and grow up if we are ever going to be able to handle the nourishment supplied by the meat of the Word.  You must spend much time learning and walking in the goodness of God if you are ever to be able to discern both good and evil.  When you become skillful in the milk of the Word and grow up you are ready for the nourishment supplied by the strong meat of the Word.

The words of the Word of God are the food we need to live a life that is more than abundant.  God's words are pure.  We need the bread of life to become born again children of God.  We need the milk of God's word to grow up.  We need the meat of God's word to nourish us as adults.  And we need to be able to present the honeycomb sweetness of God's Word to attract those who are hungering and thirsting after righteousness.  We have a complete, healthy diet for life as we live on God's Word.
