New Life - New Things

II Corinthians 5:17-18
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature [creation]: old things are passed away, behold, all things are become new.
And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation.

When we confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus Christ and believe in our heart that God raised him from the dead, God creates holy spirit within us.  We are a new creation.  We are literally born again and have new life.  The first time we were born we were born by natural birth with body and soul life only.  When we accept Jesus Christ as Lord and believe God raised him from the dead we are born a second time with a new kind of life - spirit life.

With new life we receive other new things.  The word "ALL" in verse 17 of the King James Version of the Bible does not appear most of the Greek texts ["ALL" is omitted in the texts of Lachmann, Tischendorf, Tregelles, and Alford]  Not ALL things are become new, but many things are become new.  And all of the things that are become new with the new life are of God because we have received them from God.

Reconciliation - Gladly Reconciled

The first "new thing" we have received referred to in this verse is RECONCILIATION.  Reconciliation means to bring back together that which has been separated.  Because of the sin of Adam we were left "without God and without hope."  We were separated from God.  We were in fact enemies of God and at enmity with Him.  By giving his life for ours, Jesus Christ reconciled us to God.

Romans 5:10
For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

Ephesians 2:16
And that he might reconcile both [Jews and Gentiles] unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:

Colossians 1:21-22
And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled
In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight.

We have been brought back together with God by the death of His son.  We have new spirit life and are now holy, unblameable, and unreproveable in God's sight.  We are spiritual beings with a spiritual connection to our spiritual Father.  These are some of the new things we have in Christ.

Ministry of Reconciliation - Gladly Ministering

A related "new thing" that we have is the MINISTRY OF RECONCILIATION.    "And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation."

2 Corinthians 5:19
To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

Now that we have new life and have ourselves been reconciled to God, we also have the opportunity to share God's Word regarding the new birth [Romans 10:9-10] with others and show them how to be reconciled to God and receive the new things.

2 Corinthians 5:20
Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.

In the place of Christ, in Christ's stead, we implore others to "be reconciled to God."  We have the ministry of reconciliation.

Justification - Gladly Justified

We have been legally justified.  JUSTIFICATION is "just as if you never sinned."  It is one of new things we have in Christ.  Justification is a verdict of acquittal - not guilty - issued by God, the righteous judge, as a result of Jesus Christ's obedience to His Word.

Romans 4:24-25
   But for us also, to whom it [righteousness] shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;
Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

We were completely released from the penalty of sin when God raised Jesus Christ from the dead.

Romans 5:1
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:8-9
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

Through the believing action of our Lord Jesus Christ we have peace with God.  We are no longer enemies of God accused and convicted of sin.  We are made "just as if we never sinned" - we have received justification.   We have peace with God now and we shall be saved from the wrath to come because one of the new things we have received is justification.

Sanctification - Gladly Sanctified

One of the new things we have received is SANCTIFICATION.  We were set apart BY AND FOR GOD by receiving new life when we believed the truth of His Word.

1 Corinthians 1:30
But of him [God] are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification and redemption.

The word "sanctify" means "to set apart."  When a man or woman receives new life he or she is set apart for God for all eternity.

2 Thessalonians 2:13
But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

Righteousness - Gladly Righteous   More Gladly Righteous  Even More Gladly Righteous

RIGHTEOUSNESS is one of the new things we have received.  It is being "right" before God.  Righteousness is not something that can be earned by good works.  Righteousness is one of the new things given to a person by God when that person accepts Jesus Christ's work in his or her place.

2 Corinthians 5:21
For he [God] hath made him [Jesus Christ] to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

When you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, God makes you righteous. (Romans 10:9-10) You receive new life, are born again, given sonship, justified and made righteous.  None of this is based upon your works.  You receive new things from God because you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and believed that God raised him from the dead.  Righteousness is given by God because we need it; not because we deserve it.

Philippians 3:9
And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith [believing action] of Christ, the righteousness which is of [from] God by faith[believing].

Romans 3:22
Even the righteousness of [from] God which is by faith [believing action] of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

Redemption - Glady Redeemed

REDEMPTION is one of the new things we have received with the new life.  It is to be "bought with a price."  When something is redeemed, a price is paid.  Jesus Christ paid the price for our sins and redeemed us for God.

Romans 3:24-25
Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
   Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation [payment] through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past through the forbearance of God;

Ephesians 1:7
   In whom [Christ]we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

Colossians 1:14
In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

Titus 2:14a
Who [Christ] gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity . . .

1 Peter 1:18-19a
   Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation [empty way of life] received by tradition from your fathers;
But with the precious blood of Christ . . .

Blood is used as a figure in God's Word to represent life.  Jesus Christ gave his blood - his life - for our life.  He paid the price to redeem us for God.   We have new life and new things because he paid the price of his life for ours.

Sonship - Gladly His Sons and Daughters

Galatians 4:4-7
But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons [sonship].
And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son, into your hearts, crying Abba, Father.
Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

God has placed His spirit within us and made us His sons and daughters.  We have new life - spirit life - eternal life.  As His sons, we also are His heirs and one of the new things we have received is an inheritance.

Romans 8:15-17
For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption [sonship], whereby we cry Abba, Father.
The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
And if children, then heirs, heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

Ephesians 1:5,11a
Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children[sonship] by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
In whom also we have obtained an inheritance. . .

1 John 3:2
Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

We have received new life from God.  We are His children.  We are His heirs.  We have new things in Christ now and more to come in the future.  Let us walk in newness of life!
